Review: Meant to Be by Lauren Morrill

December 22, 2012
Title: Meant to Be
Author: Lauren Morrill
Published: Delacorte Books | Nov 13, 2012
Genre: Chick Lit, Romance
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Meant to be or not meant to be . . . that is the question.

It's one thing to fall head over heels into a puddle of hazelnut coffee, and quite another to fall for the—gasp—wrong guy. Straight-A junior Julia may be accident prone, but she's queen of following rules and being prepared. That's why she keeps a pencil sharpener in her purse and a pocket Shakespeare in her, well, pocket. And that's also why she's chosen Mark Bixford, her childhood crush, as her MTB ("meant to be").

But this spring break, Julia's rules are about to get defenestrated (SAT word: to be thrown from a window) when she's partnered with her personal nemesis, class-clown Jason, on a school trip to London. After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts . . . from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to break a few rules along the way. And thus begins a wild goose chase through London, leading Julia closer and closer to the biggest surprise of all: true love.

Because sometimes the things you least expect are the most meant to be.

MTB is, hands down, The Best Chick Lit I've read this year! Just So adorable!

I called it Chick Lit and not contemporary because it was very sweet, and romantic without any major angst or drama, and for me personally, that would be a Chick Lit even though the main character is a Junior in High School. It had that feeling that I can't describe. Meant to Be has been my most anticipated read, and it exceeded every expectation I had. It had the most weirdest yet interesting characters, and it was a good change after reading about all those bad boys, and whiny girls. I simply loved Meant to Be.

Julia is a very nerdy girl, she SAT smart, hyper organized, uses bazillion post-it notes, and highlighters, carries a pocket Shakespeare, and believes in serendipity kind of love, the kind that is meant to be. And for some odd reason, I instantly related to her. I'm none of the above things mentions except I'm smart, I've never read a Shakespeare play, though I admire his work, but I do believe in fated relationships. I do believe that whoever is meant to be your Mr. Right will meet you wherever your are when the time is right, so like Julia I'm not searching him, I'm waiting for him to find me, and that's why I connected with Julia, and loved her to bits. She reminds me of myself a lot.

Jason is the type of person who you don't expect to be a main lead of a romance novel. His character reminds me of Ashton Kutcher, he is a little boy in a man's body. He is smart, very charming when he wants to be, but he is very goofy, and does weird stuff in public that might embarrass other people. I wasn't sure about him in the beginning but as the story progressed he kind of grew on me, and I could see him genuinely falling in love.

I don't want to give anything away, so I'm not going to discuss the story. Trust me, it's much better when you figure it out as you read. It was surprising, a little shocking at the end, but it was the good kind of shock. If you like Sophie Kinsella, then you should definitely read this book. It is highly recommended to any romance reader. Meant to Be is my unforgettable read, and Lauren Morill surely hit a homerun with this one.
